Kakorlantas: Increase in Fines 150 Percent Manual Suspension Hoax

JAKARTA - Head of the National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas) Irjen Wibowo said the narrative that the police enforced manual fines thoroughly and increased the fine for fines by 150 percent, as a false news alias hoax.

"Information that mentions the policy of re-enforcing manual fines in full or an increase in fines for fines by 150 percent is incorrect information," said Wibowo as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, August 4.

He emphasized that the Korlantas Polri in enforcing traffic law still prioritizes the Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system, both static ETLE and mobile ETLE.

The optimization of ETLE technology-based law enforcement is to realize objective, transparent, and accountable law enforcement.

However, he said that police officers in the field were still given the authority to take manual action under certain conditions. The policy is selective and situational.

"Manual enforcement is only carried out in a limited manner for traffic violations that are visible and have the potential to cause fatalities or endanger other road users," he explained.

The types of violations that are the target of direct enforcement include the use of exhaust systems that do not comply with technical specifications (brong exhaust), wild racing, against the flow, and reckless driving behavior that threatens public safety.

Kakorlantas also appealed to the public not to easily believe information that does not come from official sources and to verify information first before disseminating it.

"Make sure that every information received comes from our official sources, through NTMC Korlantas, so that it does not help spread misleading information that is not necessarily true," he said.

Previously, there were rumors on social media about a new 2026 fine rule that said the National Police Chief proposed the reintroduction of manual fines in full and an increase in fines by 150 percent. The information also included the names of national figures to strengthen the narrative that was spread.
