OpenAI President Says One Family of ChatGPT Devices is in the Works

JAKARTA - OpenAI is not only preparing one device for ChatGPT. OpenAI President Greg Brockman confirmed that the company is building a family of devices, amid a push for more interaction with computers through voice.

Yahoo Tech quoted Monday, August 3, reported that the statement was made by Brockman while talking to Joanna Stern on his YouTube channel. When asked about rumors of AI-based smart speakers, Brockman did not confirm or deny.

He actually said that OpenAI is preparing several devices.

"We're building one family of devices," Brockman said.

According to Brockman, OpenAI's focus is not on a particular product, but on the value that the device can provide in the long run.

Regarding the launch time, Brockman has not opened a definite date.

"You have to wait for it soon," he said.

The plan for the ChatGPT device surfaced when OpenAI was said to be working with former Apple design chief Jony Ive. The cooperation was also in the spotlight because Apple sued the company for alleged trade secret theft.

Brockman did not elaborate on the details of the case because the legal process is still ongoing. However, he emphasized that OpenAI remains focused on developing its own technology.

"We're focused on our own development and technology," Brockman said.

"We have no interest in the trade secrets of other companies. We are quite innovative," he said.

Brockman also explained why OpenAI is getting serious about entering hardware. He judged that talking would be a more natural way to interact with the machine than typing.

Hardware means physical devices, such as mobile phones, computers, smart speakers, or other devices that users use directly.

According to Brockman, talking to a computer one day could replace many of the typing activities that users currently do.

Yahoo Tech said Brockman also alluded to the "beak" shaped soundproof masks worn by some office workers. The device allows users to talk to the computer without disturbing those around them.

Brockman admitted not wearing the device. However, according to him, the existence of the device shows that there is a market need, even though the shape looks a bit strange.

On the privacy side, Brockman said OpenAI is investing in technology that ensures it can be verified and audited. The goal is, only AI reviews user personal data.

The temporary conversation mode of ChatGPT is also a concern because users want to know how far their personal data is protected when using AI services.
