Red Cross Representative Meets Aung San Suu Kyi's Detained Former Leader of Myanmar

JAKARTA - Representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) met with former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi in detention on Monday, according to local media reports.

Suu Kyi met with Arnaud de Baecque, the Red Cross representative in Myanmar, in the capital Naypyitaw, according to a report by Myanmar-based Eleven Media Group, quoted by Anadolu (3/8).

The meeting marked a rare interaction between the 81-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner and representatives of international organizations since the military seized power in February 2021.

Details of the discussion have not been immediately disclosed.

It is known that Suu Kyi has largely remained isolated from the outside world since her detention, with information about her whereabouts and condition severely restricted.

The Myanmar military seized power on February 1, 2021, after detaining Suu Kyi and other senior members of the National League for Democracy government.

She was later found guilty in a series of cases and sentenced to long prison terms. Suu Kyi and her supporters rejected the charges as politically motivated.

Since then, Myanmar has been engulfed in an extensive armed conflict between the military and resistance forces, including ethnic armed organizations.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross has maintained humanitarian operations in Myanmar during the conflict, including efforts to help people affected by fighting and detentions.
