Trump's Claim, Iran is Not Negotiating with the US

JAKARTA - Iran insists on not negotiating with the United States (US) as claimed by President Donald Trump.

Iran is currently in talks with Oman to establish a safe and temporary route for ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz.

"This effort aims to establish - as soon as possible and through consultations with Oman - a path that is essentially temporary, which can guarantee the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz," said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, quoted by CNN, Monday, August 3.

Baghaei stressed that Iran was not negotiating with the United States. However, US President Donald Trump said talks with Iran would resume on Monday, just a day after he canceled a "massive attack" on the country.

Trump previously admitted that he was asked to cancel the attack plan by his allies such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and also by Iran.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had earlier had a telephone conversation with Trump and urged an escalation of the war, according to a report by the Saudi government news agency. However, Iranian state media gave no indication that Tehran had asked for the attack to be canceled.

Trump declined to answer a question about whether the planned attack would target energy targets.

In an update, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the US was in a "fully combat-ready" position and "remains on alert - at a level of readiness not seen since World War II."
