Damkar Officer Dies while Putting Out Garbage Fire, DKI Provincial Government Prepares Strict Sanctions

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will tighten supervision of illegal waste disposal practices after a pile of garbage fire on Jalan Penggilingan Baru, Dukuh Village, Kramat Jati District, East Jakarta, killed a firefighter while on duty.

The victim was the Head of the Cepu Group Regu Cipayung Sector, Andriyono, who died after being involved in a fire handling operation on Saturday, August 1, 2026.

Head of the DKI Jakarta Communication, Informatics, and Statistics Office, Marulina Dewi, said the location of the fire was not a Waste Disposal Site (TPS). However, the land has long been used as an illegal waste disposal site, leading to a buildup of waste.

The DKI Provincial Government considers that this practice can no longer be allowed because it has the potential to trigger fires, especially in the dry season.

"As of Monday, the Public Service Officer (PPNS) of the Environment Service and Satpol PP will investigate and investigate the location of the fire. Those who illegally dispose of waste will be subject to strict sanctions," said Marulina, Monday, August 3.

In addition to law enforcement, the DKI Provincial Government will also carry out a gradual cleaning of the location after the condition is declared safe.

"In line with post-fire handling, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Environment Service will carry out waste transportation in stages. The first phase is carried out in a safe area and is not affected by the fire. Furthermore, transportation will continue in the area of the former fire after it is declared safe by the Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat)," he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the DKI Jakarta Gulkarmat Office Bayu Megantara explained that his party received a report of a fire on Saturday morning and immediately deployed 10 fire trucks and 50 personnel to the location.

According to Bayu, the deceased was not at the main point of the fire, but was tasked with finding water sources and connecting hoses as part of operational support.

"While connecting the hose, the deceased suddenly complained of chest pain. Colleagues immediately asked for medical assistance. The deceased received initial treatment at the location before being evacuated to Harapan Bunda Hospital and declared dead at 13.30 WIB. The deceased is known to have a history of heart disease," said Bayu.

The Special Staff of the Governor of DKI Jakarta for Social Communication, Chico Hakim, said the deceased had been buried on Sunday morning, August 2. He assessed that this incident was a reminder that illegal waste disposal was not only a sanitation issue, but could also endanger safety.

"This incident is a stark reminder for all residents. Illegal dumping and piling of garbage not only pollutes the environment, interferes with health, and damages the aesthetics of the city, but also has the potential to cause fires, especially in dry seasons like now," said Chico.

According to Chico, the accumulation of garbage can trigger fires, especially when the weather is dry.

The DKI Provincial Government also reminded that the practice of illegally dumping and piling up waste violates legal provisions, including Law Number 32 of 2009 concerning Environmental Protection and Management, Law Number 18 of 2008 concerning Waste Management, and applicable regional regulations.

"We appeal to the entire community to be disciplined in managing household waste and other types of waste. Use the facilities provided, follow the transportation schedule, and do not throw away waste carelessly. Small concern from every citizen will have a big impact on the safety of Jakarta and the quality of the environment," concluded Chico.
