France Tightens Borders with Spain in the Wake of Migrant Wave

France will tighten controls on its border with Spain amid a wave of migrants to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

Previously on Thursday (30/7), thousands of Moroccan youth gathered at the border between Morocco and Ceuta and hundreds of them managed to enter Spanish territory.

"In response to the situation observed in the Ceuta pocket area, since last night I have given instructions for immediate and strict surveillance at the Spanish border. In addition, I have also activated the Border Rapid Intervention Force for further inspection," said French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez as reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Friday, July 31.

The Spanish city on the North African coast is facing a sharp spike in the number of migrants trying to cross from Morocco by swimming and walking.

Authorities have added police, civilian guards, and military forces to the city.

Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Spain should be removed from the Schengen zone in connection with the issue.
