MRT Jakarta Builds Pedestrian Deck in Dukuh Atas, Facilitates Intermodal Transfer
JAKARTA - PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) is preparing the construction of the Dukuh Atas pedestrian deck.
The circular pedestrian bridge is designed to connect various modes of transportation in the Dukuh Atas area, making it easier for people to switch between modes.
Advisor of the Program Management Office Division of the Jakarta MRT, Agus Trihan, said that currently the pedestrian deck project has entered the bidding or tender stage to determine the implementing contractor.
It is targeted that contractors will start working in November 2026, and construction is expected to be completed in 2028.
Agus said that the construction of this pedestrian deck was based on the condition of the Dukuh Atas area, which has been separated into four quadrants.
As a result, he said, pedestrians have to get down to the road surface and turn far enough to change modes of transportation.
The four areas include the first quadrant (Q1) of the MRT Dukuh Atas and BNI City; the second quadrant (Q2) of the Sudirman Station and the Dukuh Atas LRT; the third quadrant (Q3) of the Wisma 46 BNI Complex; and the fourth quadrant (Q4) of the Landmark Complex, the Transjakarta Stop, and the Jakarta LRT.
"We see that there is a need for pedestrian infrastructure development, which can connect these four areas. So the main concern is connecting these four areas first," said Agus at the MRT Jakarta Transport Hub, Thursday, July 30.
Agus said the need was based on the results of a feasibility study (FS) conducted by MRT Jakarta together with Japan.
The results showed that the construction of the Dukuh Atas pedestrian deck could accelerate the movement of public transportation users in the area.
"Intermodal transfer is indeed a two to three minute savings. But the most significant thing is from the Landmark to Shangri-La. Now, people have to go down, turn around, and then get on again. With this pedestrian deck, it can save about four to five minutes," he said.
According to Agus, time savings are possible because pedestrians no longer need to turn or cross the road to change modes of transportation.
Instead, users simply walk through the pedestrian deck that connects a number of transportation nodes in the Dukuh Atas area.
Furthermore, Agus also said that based on the results of the study, it also showed that the presence of this pedestrian deck would increase comfort when changing modes, especially during hot or rainy weather.
"If the conditions are hot, rainy, with this infrastructure, it will make the journey more comfortable and more interesting for people," he said.
In addition to reducing travel time to change modes, Agus continued, the pedestrian deck is expected to become an alternative route for transportation users, thereby reducing pedestrian density, which is currently still concentrated in the Kendal Tunnel.
Agus also said that the design of this project has taken into account the widening of the track at each point which is estimated to be a location where people will stop to enjoy the view, such as the statue of General Sudirman.
"The special areas that I just mentioned in the north and south are facing the road, there will be an area expansion. So for example on the main road it is about 4 to 5 meters, the area is about 7 meters. When someone stops, it will not stop the pedestrian to change mode," he said.
This pedestrian deck, continued Agus, will be equipped with elevators, escalators, ramps, and tactile guide lanes to facilitate the mobility of all users.
"We have considered that all of these accesses must be used by all members of the community. For this reason, we have provided access that is friendly to disabled friends," he said.
