Ministry of Foreign Affairs Seriously Strengthening Adaptive, Collaborative and Result-Oriented Economic Diplomacy

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Directorate General of Economic Relations and Development Cooperation (HEKSP) will continue to strengthen adaptive, collaborative and result-oriented economic diplomacy.

One of the main steps of Indonesian economic diplomacy is to diversify markets, where the government seeks to expand markets and cooperation partners to non-traditional regions.

"The target can be qualitative (as well as) quantitative. But I think one of the efforts that is clear is that our target is to expand and encourage market diversification," explained the Director General of HEKSP, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Ambassador Daniel Tumpal Simurung Simanjuntak when asked about Indonesia's economic diplomacy target this year, in a media gathering in Jakarta, Thursday (30/7).

Formed on the basis of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Decree No. 4 of 2025 and officially operating in September of the same year, the Directorate General of HEKSP has the mandate to formulate, implement, coordinate, synchronize and control policies in the field of foreign economic relations and international development cooperation.

Ambassador Tumpal said that one of the foreign policy instruments is "strengthening economic diplomacy, in order to support the realization of national goals and priorities, through the implementation of economic diplomacy and development cooperation that is tangible and has a wide impact."

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is implementing economic diplomacy and development cooperation through collaboration, synergy, and mutual adjustment with various parties, to strengthen the achievement of national interests and improve Indonesia's position as a trusted strategic partner at the global level," explained Ambassador Tumpal.

"Moreover, in the current era, all parties know that diplomacy is one unit. Foreign policy begins at home is always conveyed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, so that economic diplomacy also aims to strengthen various national interests and government priorities," he said.

The Indonesian Ambassador to Canada for the period 2021-2025 said, Foreign Minister Sugiono wants the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to continue to work with various related ministries and agencies, in order to open access to new markets.

He also gave an example of free trade negotiations with Rwanda and Mauritius that are being carried out by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as discussions on free trade with countries other than in Africa.

In the future, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Directorate General of HEKSP will strengthen adaptive, collaborative and result-oriented economic diplomacy, with the main focus directed at increasing trade and investment, strengthening industry and downstreaming, food and energy security, development of digital economy and creative economy, to optimization of international development cooperation.

Through synergy with ministries and agencies, local governments, business actors, international organizations to the Indonesian Representative, the Directorate General of HEKSP is committed to making diplomacy an instrument that is able to open economic opportunities, strengthen global partnerships and provide tangible benefits for national economic growth and people's welfare.
