Bahlil Wants Transjakarta Buses to Use Hydrogen, Pramono Prepares Infrastructure

JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has begun preparing steps to use hydrogen as a fuel for public transportation. The plan emerged after the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia asked the DKI Provincial Government to use hydrogen for the Transjakarta fleet.

Pramono said that discussions on the use of hydrogen for Transjakarta and Transjabodetabek had been carried out together with Bahlil. In fact, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources has asked the President Director of PT PLN (Persero) to discuss the readiness for its implementation.

"So I have communicated with the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Bahlil, and Mr. Bahlil has also assigned the President Director of PLN to talk about the use of hydrogen for transportation in Transjakarta and Transjabodetabek," said Pramono at the Bundaran HI area, Wednesday, July 29.

However, the DKI Provincial Government will not immediately implement hydrogen-powered vehicles. Pramono said infrastructure was the main aspect that must be prepared before the technology was widely used.

"We will immediately mature it first, later if it is what it is, the infrastructure is ready and it is time, later we will convey it to the public," said Pramono.

In addition to discussions with the central government, the DKI Provincial Government has also received interest from a number of automotive manufacturers who want to develop hydrogen vehicles in Jakarta. Some of them even offer vehicles for pilot projects.

"There is a request from several car manufacturers that they produce hydrogen to be used in Jakarta, even they will donate one or two cars as a pilot project for the use of hydrogen in Jakarta," he said.

Previously, Bahlil Lahadalia stated that he would communicate directly with Pramono regarding the use of hydrogen as fuel for Transjakarta buses.

"Regarding the bus, I tried to communicate with the Governor of DKI to take advantage of this (hydrogen)," said Bahlil at the opening of the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit & Exhibition (GHES) 2026 in Jakarta, Tuesday, July 21, 2026.

The idea of using hydrogen for public transportation emerged after the President Director of PT PLN Darmawan Prasodjo said that the Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS) or Hydrogen Fueling Station in Jakarta was available and ready to be used.

However, until now there is no Transjakarta bus fleet that uses hydrogen fuel. "Maybe Mr. (Bahlil) can lobby the Governor of DKI," continued Darmawan.
