Mobile Phone Manufacturer Honor Partners with Arri, Prepares Robot Phone to Make Movies

JAKARTA - Chinese mobile phone manufacturer Honor has partnered with Arri Group to develop a robot phone with professional film-making capabilities. The device is claimed to be the world's first robot phone to bring the Arri cinematic device to a mobile phone.

Yicai Global, quoted Wednesday, July 29, reported that Honor and Arri will combine Honor's Chip-Device-Cloud imaging engine with Arri's experience in the field of film aesthetics and color science that has been built for more than a century.

Arri is a German company known as a professional film equipment manufacturer. Its technology is widely used in large-scale film production.

The imaging system is also being applied to other Honor products, including the upcoming Magic9 series.

The device, which Honor calls a robot phone, will support Arri LogC3, a variety of Arri Look image styles, and Arri Wide Gamut3. All three are color management devices commonly used to produce a cinematic look.

Honor said the technology was being brought to a mobile phone for the first time. Until now, the device has been widely used in the production of Hollywood films.

Arri's chief scientist, Harald Brendel, said the collaboration was not just about putting two brands on one product.

"This collaboration goes far beyond brand collaboration," said Brendel.

According to Brendel, the collaboration is the first full integration of Arri's cinematic color science into a mobile phone for consumers.

The robot phone will support 4K slow motion recording at 120 frames per second. The device is also capable of recording 4K video at 60 frames per second.

Honor says users can set beauty effects and skin smoothing directly while recording. With one touch, the device is claimed to be able to produce portrait videos with natural skin tones and textures that still look real.

A number of Arri Look color profiles will also be available within the device. Users can preview visual effects directly and produce final videos quickly.

Honor believes that improving image quality is not enough to rely on hardware updates or algorithms separately. The result depends on the combination of the sensor's ability to capture light and intelligent processing power.

The company calls the approach the law of the co-evolution of light and intelligence.

Vice President of Global Device Research at International Data Corporation, Francisco Jeronimo, said AI is no longer just an additional feature. The technology is starting to become part of the basic architecture of the device.

According to Jeronimo, the competition for mobile phones in the future is not only determined by hardware specifications. The combination of software, algorithms, chips, and ecosystems will be increasingly decisive.

He assessed that mobile phone manufacturers are beginning to switch from simply raising the specifications of hardware to the development of interconnected technology systems.
