Water-scarce areas, the government prepares for sea desalination

JAKARTA - The government is preparing seawater desalination and brackish water purification to overcome water shortages on a number of islands and drought-prone areas. The step was discussed as part of a strategy towards water self-sufficiency.

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) said that the water conditions in Indonesia are not even. A number of regions have excess supplies, while other areas still lack water.

"Indonesia consists of many islands. There are surplus areas, but there are also areas that face shortages or potential drought," said AHY at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday, July 28.

According to AHY, the government continues to search for new water sources. Options discussed include processing seawater for certain areas and clarifying brackish water so that it can be used by the community.

Nationally, the water balance based on data from the Ministry of Public Works is said to be sufficient. However, the government remains vigilant about the increase in the level of El Nino which takes place simultaneously with the dry season.

Water availability is needed for household needs, raw water, and agricultural irrigation. The government also maintains the discharge of dams, reservoirs, and lakes so that they do not fall to a level that endangers the supply.

AHY has not mentioned the area that will be the first location of the desalination project or its completion target. The water self-sufficiency strategy is still being discussed across ministries and agencies.
