Government Investigates Drones for Weather Modification Operations

JAKARTA - The government is studying the use of drones in weather modification operations to handle forest fires and maintain water reserves during El Nino. The technology is considered to make operations more efficient and targeted.

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) said that weather modification operations continue to be developed. The government does not only rely on conventional methods that have been used so far.

"In the future, with the development of technology, for example drones and others, this can increase efficiency as well as the effectiveness of weather modification operations," said AHY after a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday, July 28.

The operation will be used for two purposes. First, to help handle the fire point. Second, to keep the discharge of dams, reservoirs, and lakes safe during the dry season.

According to AHY, weather modification operations have actually been carried out. The government is now continuing to make simulations and projections of needs for the next few weeks to months.

Its implementation will involve the BMKG, BNPB, local governments, and other related institutions.

AHY has not explained the time of drone implementation, the test location, or its operation scheme. The government is still discussing the most effective technology to deal with the risk of El Nino and forest fires.
