US Orders Power Grid Stabilization to Reduce Risk of Blackouts

JAKARTA - The US Department of Energy ordered the stabilization of the electricity grid to ensure that the electricity grid remains functional in 17 states during hot weather.

"The US Department of Energy (DOE) issued an emergency order to ensure that Americans in 17 states continue to receive electricity during the energy emergency in the region due to hot weather," according to a statement quoted by Sputnik, Monday, July 27.

The DOE also directed Southwest Power Pool, Inc. (SPP) to deploy certain capacity if needed.

"DOE estimates that more than 35 gigawatts (GW) of unused reserve power plants are still available across the country," the statement said.

The emergency order is in effect until August 3, the department added.

According to the portal PowerOutages.us, more than 100,000 customers across the US experienced power outages on Monday.
