Imogiri Forest Fire in Bantul Burns 8 Acres of Land

YOGYAKARTA - The Bantul Police said that the forest fire that occurred in Kapanewon Imogiri, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY), on Sunday (26/7) evening, was successfully extinguished manually. The fire burned about eight hectares of land.

The Public Relations Officer of the Bantul Police, Iptu Rita Hidayanto, said the fire occurred in two locations at almost the same time, namely in the hilly area of Dusun Putat, Kalurahan Selopamioro, and the hilly area of Kalurahan Wukirsari.

"The fire in Selopamioro, the area of land that burned is estimated to have reached five hectares in the Sultan Ground (SG) land," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, July 27.

According to Rita, in Selopamioro the fire emerged from several points, namely to the west of the entrance to Bango Village and two other points in the Putat Village area.

All the fire points, he continued, were in hilly areas far from residential areas.

"Witnesses saw a plume of smoke accompanied by flames from a distance of about one kilometer, then immediately informed the residents and reported the incident to the Damkar Imogiri Sector and the Damkar Pundong Sector for extinguishing," he said.

Meanwhile, another fire occurred in the hills of Kalurahan Wukirsari, specifically in Karangasem Village RT 06 and Nogosari Village RT 04, with a total area of burned land estimated at three hectares.

"The burned land consists of residents' land and SG land located in hilly areas, so the location is quite far from the community's settlement," he said.

According to him, the extinguishing process at both locations was carried out manually by residents, volunteers, fire fighters, and the police because most of the locations could not be reached by fire trucks.

"The condition of the burned land is filled with branches, dry leaves, and vegetation in the form of teak, bamboo, and sono trees so that the fire is quite easy to spread," he said.

Until now, the cause of the fire in both locations is still under investigation by the police.
