OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Health in the US, Users Can Now Connect Medical Records to AI

JAKARTA - OpenAI officially launched ChatGPT Health for all adult users in the United States. This feature allows users to connect medical records from hospitals and personal health data directly to ChatGPT to help understand laboratory test results, monitor health conditions, and prepare for consultations with medical professionals.

The service is available through the web and iOS versions of ChatGPT for all user levels, from Free, Go, Plus, to Pro. Through this feature, users can connect medical records from major health service systems such as Epic and Oracle Health, as well as data from personal health applications, including Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, and Function.

OpenAI states that ChatGPT Health was developed to simplify access to health information that has been spread across various patient portals and fitness apps. By integrating various data sources, users can obtain explanations of laboratory results, medication usage history, and fitness trends through conversations on ChatGPT.

The company explained that the feature was previously tested on a limited basis earlier this year. During the trial period, OpenAI found that more than 70 percent of health-related questions naturally arise in everyday conversations, such as when users want to make sure the contents of potentially allergic foods when preparing a meal menu.

Based on these findings, OpenAI decided to integrate ChatGPT Health directly into the main conversation interface. Thus, users no longer need to open a tab or a special service to access the connected health information.

ChatGPT Health's capabilities are supported by OpenAI's latest model. Free service users will use GPT-5.5 Instant, while paying customers gain access to GPT-5.6 Sol. OpenAI says both models offer better reasoning capabilities in understanding complex health information.

In its development process, OpenAI said its team worked with hundreds of active practicing doctors to test the performance of the AI model on various real-world medical scenarios.

To address concerns about the security of health data, OpenAI implemented a number of protection mechanisms. The company confirmed that the connected medical records, Apple Health data, and conversations using the information would not be used to train AI models.

In addition, ChatGPT will ask for permission first if it needs access to user health data to provide a more appropriate answer. Users can also enable or disable this access at any time as needed.

OpenAI also said health data gets an additional layer of encryption, both when it's stored and when it's sent out, as part of an effort to improve protection of sensitive medical information.

While highlighting various studies that show AI's ability to help understand complex medical scenarios, OpenAI insists that ChatGPT Health is not intended to replace professional health care workers.

The company said the feature is designed as a support tool that can help users understand medical information and prepare for consultations with doctors, not as a substitute for diagnosis or clinical decisions by medical professionals.

The launch of ChatGPT Health marks OpenAI's latest move in expanding the use of artificial intelligence in the health sector while still emphasizing the importance of protecting data privacy and the role of professional health care providers in medical decision-making.
