Yusril Meets Islamic Organizations at MUI to Clarify Abdul Karim Case
JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said he would meet with several Islamic community organizations (ormas) at the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) office, to clarify the case of Abdul Karim Raeq Miqdad.
He said MUI had asked the government to provide an official explanation regarding the deportation of Abdul Karim, who is an Interpol fugitive and a Palestinian citizen, to Cyprus.
"Tonight at 7 o'clock I will meet Islamic organizations at the Indonesian Ulema Council office," said Yusril as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, July 22.
In addition to providing an explanation, Yusril said he also wanted to hear the opinions of Islamic mass organizations regarding the case of Abdul Karim on that occasion.
Dialog with Islamic organizations, he said, will continue, especially if there are new developments related to the case.
Abdul Karim was arrested in the Tangerang area, Banten, Indonesia on Thursday (16/7), after the issuance of a red notice alias red notice by the Cyprus Interpol and deported to Cyprus on Friday (17/7).
After being deported, Abdul Karim will be tried in the Cyprus Court after being named a suspect in a terrorism crime based on the initial evidence that has been collected.
Thus, he ensured that Abdul Karim would not be handed over by the Cypriot government to the Israeli government, as the narrative circulated later.
"After I met with the Ambassador of Cyprus, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will also submit an official diplomatic note to the government of Cyprus to obtain assurances that there will be no further deportations from Cyprus," said the Coordinating Minister.
Yusril also ensured that Abdul Karim was not an ulama from Palestine or a humanitarian activist in Gaza, but an ordinary citizen who was involved in the business world.
It is known that Abdul Karim has been living in Indonesia for the last 3 years and is married and has children.
