No More Password, Spotify Provides Login with Passkey

JAKARTA - Spotify is rumored to be developing login support using a passkey that allows users to log in to an account without having to enter a password. If officially launched, this feature will allow users to authenticate using a fingerprint, facial scan, or device PIN.

This information was revealed from the results of analyzing the Android application code of Spotify which showed the development of a passkey-based authentication feature. Although it has not been officially announced, the findings indicate that Spotify is testing or developing the feature behind the scenes.

Passkey is now increasingly used as a substitute for passwords because it is considered safer and practical. With this method, users no longer need to remember or type passwords every time they log in to an account. The login process is carried out using biometrics, such as fingerprints or Face ID, as well as the device's screen lock.

Currently, Spotify still relies on a combination of email addresses and passwords as the main method for logging into an account. Unlike many other digital services that have previously adopted passkeys, the music streaming platform has not provided this modern authentication option.

Based on the APK teardown results conducted by Android Authority, a number of codes in the Spotify Android application were found that led to the development of passkey support. The code includes internal settings for passkey authentication as well as references indicating the passkey registration process to a Spotify account.

Although the feature is not yet available to users, the existence of the code is a strong indication that Spotify is developing password-less login capabilities. However, as with other APK teardown findings, the presence of code in the application does not guarantee that the feature will be released to the public.

When it is officially available, the passkey is expected to make the Spotify login process faster and more convenient. In addition, this authentication method also increases account security because it is more difficult to be the target of phishing attacks that aim to steal user passwords.

Spotify previously included in the list of major digital platforms that have not supported passkeys, along with Netflix and Instagram. Therefore, the development of this feature is considered an important step to improve security while simplifying the user experience.

Until now, Spotify has not given an official statement regarding the development and schedule of launching the login feature using the passkey. Thus, all of the information is still indicative based on findings on the Android application version that is being developed.
