Garuda Investigates New Routes to Cultural Destinations, Yogyakarta is Ready to be the Main Gateway

JAKARTA - Garuda Indonesia is studying the opening of new routes and the addition of connectivity to a number of cultural destinations. Yogyakarta is projected to be the main gateway for cultural tourism after Bali.

The plan was discussed in a meeting between Culture Minister Fadli Zon with Garuda Indonesia, InJourney, and InJourney Airports in Jakarta, Monday (20/7).

The meeting focused on flight access to cultural heritage areas, including Borobudur, Prambanan, Plaosan, Sewu, and Muara Jambi. The government assessed that the revitalization of destinations is not enough without adequate transportation support.

"Various revitalization efforts that we are doing need to be accompanied by strengthening flight connectivity," said Fadli.

According to Fadli, direct international flights are needed to open access for foreign tourists to Yogyakarta, Jambi, and other areas with cultural wealth.

Garuda Indonesia President Director Glenny H. Kairupan said the company was still calculating the fleet needs and market potential before opening new routes.

"Garuda Indonesia will continue to study the opportunities for opening routes, including from countries with high tourist potential," he said.

In addition to new routes, Garuda has prepared a Free Add-on Domestic program. This program utilizes empty seats on domestic flights as an additional trip at no cost to the destination city.

Garuda Indonesia's Commercial Director Reza Aulia Hakim said the scheme was prepared to connect international passengers with cultural destinations in the country.

The program is aimed at increasing the number of foreign tourists and extending their stay in Indonesia.

InJourney's President Director Maya Watono said Yogyakarta has a great opportunity to become a cultural tourism gateway after Bali. This potential is supported by the revitalization of cultural and tourism assets that are underway.
