Yusril asks the KPK not to take over the Febrie case, give the Attorney General's Office the opportunity to complete the investigation

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra asked the public to give the Attorney General's Office the opportunity to complete the investigation into the case of former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) Febrie, without rushing to encourage the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to take over the case.

Yusril said that the investigation, which was originally carried out by the National Police, has now been continued by the Attorney General's Office. According to Yusril, the process is still running according to the legal mechanism.

"I see one positive development, cooling down. The handling of the case of Mr. Former Jampidsus Mr. Febrie has been handed over to the Attorney General's Office," said Yusril at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Monday (20/7).

Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian admitted that he was concerned about the re-interfering of regional heads in the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) hand-in-hand operation (OTT). This concern was conveyed following the OTT against the Regent of West Lombok, Lalu Ahmad Zaini.

According to Tito, the government has actually made various efforts to prevent corruption, ranging from briefing regional heads through retreats, strengthening a more transparent financial management system, to ongoing coaching. However, corruption cases still occur.

"I am concerned, because our regional heads have given retreats, then they give initial briefings, then they have also made the financial system more transparent, then also the coaching has been done, it has also been collected by the President in Sentul, it still happens," said Tito quoted by Antara at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Monday, July 20 evening.

Tito assessed that prevention efforts ultimately depended on the integrity of each regional head. Therefore, he asked all regional heads to make the OTT carried out by the KPK a reminder to continue to be aware and avoid corrupt practices.

"Second, return to the integrity of each person. So, I hope that with the existence of OTT-OTT, regional heads including in West Lombok, other regional heads, that all of them are self-aware, conduct introspection, do not commit violations, especially criminal acts of corruption," he said.

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) previously arrested West Lombok Regent Lalu Ahmad Zaini along with dozens of other people in an OTT on Monday morning. This operation became the 17th OTT carried out by the KPK throughout 2026.

He explained that the Attorney General's Office did not start the investigation from the beginning or appoint new suspects, but continued the investigation that had been carried out by the National Police investigators by strengthening the evidence and examining witnesses.

Yusril reminded that the KPK Law does give the KPK the authority to supervise, even take over the investigation of corruption cases under certain conditions. However, this authority should not be used as long as the investigation is professional and transparent.

"If the handling is on the track, it is really professional and transparent, I think give the opportunity to the Attorney General's Office to conduct an investigation," he said.

According to Yusril, the public, anti-corruption activists, and academics can monitor the course of the investigation to ensure that it remains in accordance with the law.
