Cost of Renunciation of Citizenship Increases Fivefold, Minister of Law: Only 200-300 Applicants

JAKARTA - The cost of applying for Indonesian citizenship loss has increased fivefold, from Rp. 1 million to Rp. 5 million. Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas assessed that the increase was not worth questioning because the number of applicants was only around 200 to 300 people.

The government said that tariff adjustments were necessary to finance the maintenance of digital services at the Ministry of Law. The non-tax state revenue tariff is said to have not changed for a decade.

"The application for loss of citizenship, from Rp. 1 million to Rp. 5 million. The total who have applied now at the Ministry of Law is only around 200 or 300 people," said Supratman at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Monday (20/7).

He compared the number of applicants with the Indonesian population which reached hundreds of millions of people.

"Of the 300 million people, what do we need to worry about with that?" he said.

Supratman said the average applicant for citizenship had economic ability. However, he emphasized that the reason for the increase was not solely because the applicant was considered capable.

"It's not about being able or not. The system we build must be maintained," he said.

According to Supratman, the government needs the cost to maintain the digital system to run and reach various legal services. The management of citizenship applications also involves 14 to 15 ministries and agencies.
