Tokyo Enters Summer, Temperatures Reach 35 Degrees Celsius

JAKARTA - The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the rainy season is predicted to have ended in a number of areas in the country, including Tokyo and Nagoya.

Tokyo even experienced a "very hot" day for the first time in 2026, as temperatures hit 35 degrees Celsius.

Most areas in Japan set a heatstroke alert on Monday, which is a national holiday to commemorate Sea Day (Umi no hi) celebrated every Monday in the third week of July.

According to JMA, as reported by ANTARA from Kyodo, Monday, July 20, the temperature has reached 35 degrees Celsius or even higher than that figure at 250 locations out of a total of 914 observation points across the country as of Monday at 18.00 local time.

The record high temperature reached 39.4 degrees Celsius in Koshu, Yamanashi Prefecture, which is west of Tokyo.

Meanwhile, downtown Tokyo recorded a temperature of 36.1 degrees Celsius.

The end of the rainy season in Japan came about 22 days later this year than last year for the Kanto-Koshin region, which includes Tokyo, as well as 23 days later in the Tokai region centered on Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture.

The rainy season was also declared to have ended in the Kyushu region located in the southwest of Japan, on July 13.

The JMA estimates that the weather with high temperatures will continue on Tuesday (21/7).
