Febrie Case Must Be Free from Interference, Faces Heavy Penalty if Convicted

JAKARTA - Legal expert Romli Atmasasmita assessed that the handling of the alleged corruption and money laundering (TPPU) cases that dragged former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) Febrie Adriansyah must be carried out professionally and free from interference. According to him, if proven guilty in court, the defendant deserves to be prosecuted with a heavy sentence according to the weight of the alleged crime.

Romli said that cases involving alleged corruption and TPPU are serious crimes so that the law enforcement process must uphold transparency, accountability, and legal certainty.

He also highlighted the potential influence of outside the judicial process which was considered to be able to interfere with the independence of law enforcement.

"This kind of intervention, if left unchecked, can undermine public trust in law enforcement institutions and erode the principle of equality before the law which is the foundation of the rule of law," Romli said in his analysis, Monday, July 20.

According to Romli, every stage of the investigation must be carried out transparently so that the case does not stop as a legal controversy without producing certainty for the public.

On the other hand, Romli put his hopes on the investigative team handling the case. He assessed the composition of Team 9, which consists of nine prosecutors, some of whom are former investigators of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), has experience handling corruption cases with a level of proof that is complex.

Romli hopes that the team can work independently without pressure from any party so that the legal process can run up to the prosecution stage.

According to him, if the evidence has met the requirements and the case is proven in court, the charges filed must also reflect the seriousness of the alleged criminal acts, including corruption and money laundering.

"If Team 9 can work professionally, independently, and without intervention, there is a real hope that this case can be resolved to the prosecution stage. The charges filed should be commensurate with the weight of the alleged corruption and money laundering cases handled," said Romli.
