The area of the former Sultan Hotel is included in the GBK redesign master plan.
JAKARTA - The government is preparing a redesign of the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) area, including the former Sultan Hotel area, Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), sports facilities, commercial areas, green open spaces, and transportation nodes.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said that the arrangement was made to unite the functions of sports and business in one more modern area.
"We want to redesign the entire GBK, especially the sports and commercial areas," said Prasetyo at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Monday, July 20.
He said a number of cooperation contracts that were not running had been revoked. This step was taken so that the land and facilities that exist can be included in the new design of the GBK area.
"Cooperation contracts that have not been or have not been worked on, we have canceled so that they become part of the redesign," he said.
The plan includes the construction of commercial facilities, hotels, and the integration of the area's functions with the JCC. The government also wants to strengthen sports facilities so that GBK can accommodate more international events.
"We want to have something more modern, including sports facilities. We want as many international events as possible to be held at GBK, not only football, but also aquatic and tennis," said Prasetyo.
According to Prasetyo, supporting facilities need to be equipped because the implementation of international competitions requires certain standards.
The government also included green open spaces in the design. Prasetyo said the design of the area would be directed at a concept of environmental friendliness.
"The green open space and open area must be optimal," he said.
In addition, the GBK area is also designed to have a transportation node to reduce density and facilitate visitor access.
Prasetyo said the project design had been presented several times, but was still being improved. The government is also exploring potential investors.
"There have been several exposures, but we are improving and perfecting them while exploring investors," he said.
According to Prasetyo, investors interested in this project are both domestic and foreign. Andantara and a number of SOEs, including InJourney, are also involved in exploring the project.
However, the government has not yet determined the cooperation scheme to be used. Investment models, including the possibility of a build-operate-transfer or BOT scheme, are still being formulated.
"We have not yet formulated it," said Prasetyo. The government targets the new GBK area to become a new icon of Jakarta as well as attracting more tourists and international event organizers.
