For the Sake of Jegal Apple, Samsung Overhauls the Total Production of the 'Wide' Version of the Galaxy Z Fold 8
JAKARTA - South Korean technology giant Samsung is reported to have changed its total manufacturing target. This major step was taken to prioritize the production of its latest foldable device, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. This strategic decision even made this Wide variant manage to surpass the production target for the Fold 8 Ultra and Flip 8 models.
This change of direction is not without reason. Samsung is now switching to a 4:3 aspect ratio that at first glance looks like a passport. The latest design trend on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is deliberately pushed to anticipate the presence of their eternal rival's first folding phone, namely the Apple iPhone Ultra. The entire ecosystem of the latest hardware is scheduled to make its official debut in the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked live event on July 22.
Shifting Manufacturing TargetsBased on the latest reports from the supply chain, Samsung has adjusted component orders for the next generation of foldable devices. According to Korean media outlet ETnews, Samsung plans to produce as many as 2.8 million units of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 wide screen edition. This figure puts it far above the production target for the Ultra and Flip models.
For comparison, the production target for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra - which was previously a traditional standard variant - is only pegged at 2 million units. On the other hand, the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip 8 folding device is only targeted to reach 1.5 million units. This change in strategy marks a fairly rapid shift from the company's initial plan to evenly split the assembly line between the Wide and Ultra variants.
Samsung's bet on mass production is centered on the new 4:3 aspect ratio. This unique geometric shape resembles a small notebook or a slim passport. When the device is closed, you will be presented with an external screen measuring 7.6 inches and an internal work area of 5.4 inches. This shorter but wider design comes as a direct answer to user complaints that the outer screen on the old model is too high and narrow like a remote control.
Industry analysts see this bold move as a preemptive strike against Apple. The Cupertino rival is indeed planning to enter the folding phone market this fall. Apple is predicted to bring a device with similar proportions that will most likely debut with the name iPhone Ultra.
Remove Screen WrinklesIn addition to the basic shape change, the Galaxy Unpacked event will also showcase massive durability improvements through Flex Titanium screen technology. To overcome the annoying screen folding problem on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Samsung chose to remove the traditional internal polymer layer. Instead, they use a rigid but flexible titanium alloy film (titanium-alloy film).
This component improvement is reported to be able to prevent the screen glass from warping or bending in the hinge area. The sturdy structure rests on a micro-perforated titanium plate that can bend perfectly without cracking, while strengthening the panel from below to minimize visible folds.
On the other side, leaked technical data shows that Apple is trying to overcome the same structural obstacles with a very different engineering philosophy. Instead of strengthening the screen from below with a titanium plate, Apple's design uses a special Ultra-Thin Glass.
This glass is chemically cut to be thinner in the hinge fold area and thicker at the edges to maintain the rigidity of the device. In addition, Apple is reportedly relying on 3D-printed hinges with fewer moving parts, as well as special adhesives that can expand to disguise the physical basin when the panel is opened.
Samsung's New StrategyIt's easy to understand why Samsung is betting so big on this Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide variant. First, although this device is not cheap, some price leaks indicate that this phone will be priced slightly below the Galaxy Z Fold 7 price (1,899 versus 1,999 US dollars).
Second, the appeal of this new wide design will be a magnet for consumers, while providing unique features in the global market. Keep in mind that the only commercially available wide-design foldable phone on the market is made by Huawei, and it is only sold in China. Therefore, users will feel that they have an exclusive and unique phone, which is often the key to the premium technology industry.
In addition, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will be the only direct Android-based competitor to face Apple's Ultra iPhone. So, if you want a wide folding phone that runs the Android operating system, your only choice is to turn to Samsung.
Nevertheless, we must also remember that Samsung and Apple recently failed when trying to set a new trend in the smartphone sector, one of which is the ambition to popularize super-thin (ultra-thin) smart phones, where Samsung even seems to have backed out of the competition. Now, we can only wait and see if the history of failure will be repeated, or whether this wide folding form will become the new standard of the future.
