Bellingham on the Verge of Suspension for the France Match after Slapping an Argentine Player

JAKARTA - England midfielder Jude Bellingham slapped Argentina's Valentin Barco on the back of the head after their defeat in the 2026 World Cup semi-final in Atlanta.

Barco was a substitute not playing, but ran onto the pitch to celebrate the equaliser by Enzo Fernandez, clenching his fist as he ran along the 18-yard line and was given a shove by England defender John Stones.

Bellingham approached Barco after the game had finished as the player celebrated with his team-mates and appeared to slap the back of his head.

The former Brighton player then turned to face Bellingham before the two were separated.

For the incident, Bellingham could face action from FIFA's Disciplinary Committee if the alleged slap is deemed to be violent conduct.

"A player who, when not in possession of the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or other person on the head or face with the hand or arm is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used can be justified," read the IFAB rule.

The charge of violent conduct could result in the 23-year-old being suspended for the third-place play-off against France in Miami on Sunday, July 19, 2026, early morning WIB.

Denies Having a Fight with Messi

In addition to the slap, Bellingham was involved in an emotional discussion with Lionel Messi during the first half. However, the assumption that he was at odds with the Argentina captain was immediately denied.

"Actually we are discussing the violation. That's not a bad thing. I'm sure everyone will do their own thing and make it a big problem. However, it's actually not a big deal."

"I think there was a foul earlier. He said: 'What about the foul against me?' I said: 'You are strong enough to accept it.' You understand what I mean?"

"It's an honor to play against him, there's nothing like it when you play against him. I was obviously on the losing side, which is very painful. However, it's an honor to face one of the best," said Bellingham.
