One Step Closer to Becoming British PM, Andy Burnham Officially Becomes Labour Party Leader
JAKARTA - Former Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has been officially appointed as the head of the British Labour Party, so that he can immediately become the new British prime minister, according to an announcement by the Chair of the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party Shabana Mahmood.
Mahmood announced that Burnham was the only candidate for the new Labor Party chairman, so that he could be legally appointed as the party chairman.
Burnham then expressed his readiness to take on the trust as a candidate for British Prime Minister, while expressing his gratitude to Keir Starmer for his service in leading Britain and the Labour Party.
"This is a moment of pride that you have given me and my family, it's very emotional. For it, I am ready. I am ready to lead and build on the foundation that has been made," said Burnham as reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Friday, July 17.
Under Keir Starmer's leadership, he said, Labour had gone from the worst defeat to one of the biggest victories in the party's history.
"Keir has taken the Labour Party from being an opposition party to being a party that is changing people's lives. And that's what we've done in the last two years," he added.
Burnham admitted that he had not yet made any decisions regarding the composition of his cabinet, but he promised to do so soon. The new cabinet he will form will reflect all parties in the Labor Party as well as society.
"We will not defeat the new British right-wing if we are bogged down in struggles and pull-offs. This is a pleasure that is the heaviest burden on those who need the Labour Party the most. The fight to defeat the dangerous culture that goes with it will be the hallmark of my leadership," he said.

Burnham also acknowledged a number of failures in Labor policy and said his leadership would be the last chance to change it.
PM Keir Starmer announced his resignation as Labour leader on June 22, but he will remain in his post until his successor is elected.
The election of the new Labour Party leader begins on July 9 and is expected to be completed before the British Parliament returns to session in September.
