Weda Bay Nickel Strengthens Mine Reclamation and Revegetation for Environmental Restoration

JAKARTA - PT Weda Bay Nickel continues to strengthen environmental management through the implementation of reclamation and revegetation in the area of operational mine openings. This effort is part of the company's sustainable approach to ensure that every operational phase runs in line with the recovery of environmental functions. WBN is committed to continuing to carry out these strategic steps to minimize the impact of its operational activities on the surrounding environment.

Based on the latest reclamation report as of March 2026, Weda Bay Nickel has reclaimed 223.43 hectares of land as part of efforts to restore the ecological function of the mine operation area. The reclamation area is spread over a number of areas within the WBN operational area, including Kao Rahai, Biri-Biri, and Tofu.

Meanwhile, revegetation is carried out gradually in accordance with the reclamation plan that has been approved by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and in line with applicable regulations. This effort is also supported by the 2.02-hectare Weda Bay Nickel nursery facility, which allows the company to prepare and cultivate various types of plants needed for revegetation in post-mining reclamation areas.

The reclamation process includes reshaping the land contour, planting various types of vegetation, and monitoring plant growth to ensure the recovery process runs optimally.

Manager of Health, Safety, and Environment at Weda Bay Nickel, Ronggour Siahaan, said that reclamation is an integral part of the company's operational cycle.

"We run environmental management as part of every operational phase, from planning and implementation to monitoring and recovery of areas that have been completed. Various activities involving employees and business partners also strengthen this culture, so that environmental responsibility can be applied consistently in daily activities," said Ronggour, Friday, July 17.

This commitment is realized through various initiatives involving employees and business partners. In June 2026, WBN planted 1,000 tree seedlings in three operational areas, namely Kao Rahai, Biri-Biri, and Tofu.

In addition, WBN also held a Clean Up Day in June 2026 in a number of employee and contractor housing areas. In this activity, participants cleaned the area around it while sorting the garbage based on its type to build a habit of more responsible waste management.

Together with its contractors, Weda Bay Nickel also implements the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle through the management and reuse of materials that are no longer used as part of circular economic practices. Materials such as scrap metal and used drums are processed into creative and functional products, including miniature heavy equipment and furniture.

All of these activities are part of Weda Bay Nickel's internal initiative themed "Weda Today, Earth Tomorrow" which was carried out in conjunction with World Environment Day 2026.

"Through this initiative, we reaffirm our commitment to implementing environmental awareness, not only in operational areas, but also in daily activities. In the future, we will continue to strengthen collaboration with employees and business partners to support more responsible mining operational practices and minimize their impact on the surrounding environment," said Ronggour.
