The song Daerah Cublak Suweng is an inspiration to enjoy a cup of Nusantara coffee
JAKARTA - A cup of coffee has become part of the daily routine for many people. Some enjoy it to start the morning, accompany work, to become a reason to gather with friends or family.
Behind this habit, coffee is no longer seen as just a drink, but also a medium that can bring experiences, from knowing the origin of coffee beans to the accompanying cultural stories.
This trend has made many coffee industry players to start exploring the richness of local Indonesia, not only through taste, but also through the stories that are raised in each of their products.
The blend of coffee from various regions, cultural philosophy, regional songs to folk stories is a new way to introduce the richness of the archipelago to coffee lovers.
One of the approaches is carried out by Roemah Koffie through the launch of premium roastery beans titled Cublak Suweng, which combines Gayo, Aceh, and Temanggung coffee beans, Central Java.
The name Cublak Suweng itself is taken from a song and a traditional Javanese game that teaches the meaning of togetherness and simplicity. Roemah Koffie CEO Felix TJ said that philosophy was the main inspiration in developing coffee.
"In Cublak Suweng coffee, this philosophy is infused into three interconnected circles. First, the Inner Circle is our personal relationship as individuals with ourselves, second, the Shared Circle is our relationship with others, and finally, the Eternal Circle is our relationship with nature," he said in a press conference Cublak Suweng at Roemah Koffie, PIK, Jakarta, recently.
According to Felix, the combination of coffee bean characters from the two regions presents a balance of taste that reflects the philosophy of the three circles.
The characteristics of coffee beans, for example, Gayo has a distinctive taste that meets the touch of caramel, hazelnut, and chocolate from Temanggung coffee beans, making this coffee has a balanced and harmonious taste, like the three circles of meaning.
"With this taste curation, we hope that Cublak Suweng can be a gateway for more domestic and international people to enjoy premium Indonesian coffee," he said.
Public interest in premium coffee has also continued to increase in recent years. This has encouraged the birth of various new explorations, both in terms of taste characteristics and flexibility of presentation.
There are connoisseurs who prefer black coffee to enjoy the original taste profile of coffee beans, while some others choose espresso-based blends such as latte or cappuccino.
Commercial Director of Roemah Koffie, Ryo Limijaya, said that Cublak Suweng was developed to meet the needs of various coffee enthusiasts.
"Cublak Suweng is designed to maintain the strong Indonesian coffee character, but has a flexible taste spectrum. It is this middle point that makes Cublak Suweng can be enjoyed as black coffee or explored as an espresso base for lattes and other coffee creations. This release is here to meet the needs of coffee lovers and coffee business owners who are looking for one coffee base for various explorations," he explained.
Not only does it lift the philosophy through the name, cultural elements are also present in the packaging design which features illustrations of the Kancil and Turtle folklore.
The story reminds us of the Javanese philosophy of alon-alon asal kelakon, as well as an effort to reintroduce traditional stories to the community through something close to everyday life.
As the culture of coffee drinking in Indonesia develops, a cup of coffee is now more than just a drink. It contains the journey of coffee beans from various regions, the hard work of farmers, to cultural values that are passed down across generations.
