Steelheart Releases MV Without You, The Vocalist Jumps as Director

Steelheart officially released a music video for "Without You", a cover of a classic song by Badfinger. The vocalist, Miljenko Matijevic, jumped in as director, also involving Sarah Jayne Rothkopf as his co-star.

The MV shooting process was carried out in several locations, namely Patrick's Point (California), Gold Beach (Oregon), and Malibu (California).

This moment feels special considering that in 1996, the cover version of "Without You" by Mariah Carey once dominated Europe and became the 7th best-selling single in the UK, even occupying the No. 1 position in more than a dozen countries and staying two weeks at the top of the European Hot 100. In the same year, Matijevic - who is already known to the world through "She's Gone" and "I'll Never Let You Go (Angel Eyes)" - has secretly recorded his own version of the BADFINGER song. However, the recording has not been released. Now, 30 years later, he is finally ready to share it with the public.

The Steelheart version of "Without You" comes with an orchestra of 40 players, as well as vocals that Matijevic calls the most emotional he has ever recorded.

This release follows the band's "Steelheart 30" campaign, which celebrates three decades since their self-titled debut album was released on July 10, 1990 - an album that sold 33 thousand copies in just one day in Japan, was certified platinum, and reached No. 40 on the Billboard 200. Their signature power ballad, "She's Gone", has spent 17 weeks at No. 1 on the international charts and has now been viewed more than 278 million times on Spotify, complete with a newly released 30-year-old orchestral video on YouTube.

"Without You" itself was written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of BADFINGER, first appearing on the album "No Dice" (1970), then re-recorded by Harry Nilsson and AIR SUPPLY before finally soaring through Mariah Carey's version. However, this song has never received a definitive interpretation from Matijevic - until now.

The momentum of this release is not accidental. Steelheart is enjoying a revival through the album "Steelheart 30" which contains re-recordings, remixes, and orchestral sessions; a limited vinyl edition of 500 signed and numbered copies; and a recent collaboration with Jeff Keith from TESLA to cover FOGHAT's song, "I Just Wanna Make Love To You".

Matijevic was born in Zagreb, Croatia, and moved to the United States when he was six years old. For more than three decades, he was known as one of the most distinctive voices in rock - from being the lead singer of Steelheart, filling in for the singing voice for Mark Wahlberg's character in the film "Rock Star", to appearing as the lead singer of THE DOORS with Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger.

This formidable career even rose from the severe injuries he suffered in a stage accident in 1992, which almost took his life.

In 2026, Matijevic is rumored to be working on an original hard rock project with Niclas Englin (THE HALO EFFECT, ex-IN FLAMES). More information will be announced soon.
