Japan Open 2026: 6 Indonesian representatives to the second round

JAKARTA - Indonesia managed to secure six tickets to the second round of the 2026 BWF Super 750 Japan Open after the men's singles Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah managed to stop the experienced player Rasmus Gemke (Denmark).

Ubed, the nickname of Ubaidillah, defended his dream in the tournament through a dramatic three-game match that ended with a score of 21-14, 16-21, and 21-18 on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, afternoon WIB.

"Today's match, thank God, has been able to be given a victory, smooth without injury as well. The game was quite long. If you say it is not easy," said the badminton player from Madura in an official statement received.

Ubed was very comfortable leading the match in the first game after he took the first two points. However, the 19-year-old shuttler faced a tough duel in the next two games.

He had led 15-13 after going through the tight start of the second game, but Rasmus' six-point streak after that changed everything. In the third game, it had to fall and rise even though it was 8-4.

"Fortunately, the coach was able to convince me and I tried to calm down, calm down. Thank God I was able to return to the situation earlier. This is an important lesson for me to go forward," he said.

From the men's singles, Ubed qualified for the second round along with Alwi Farhan. He will then face third seed Anders Antonsen, also from Denmark.

The Indonesian men's singles also actually dropped Jonatan Christie in this event. However, the 2018 Asian Games gold medalist and third seed was immediately defeated by Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul from Thailand.

From the women's singles, Putri Kusuma Wardani who came down alone was also able to survive in Japan. The badminton player born in Tangerang got a ticket to the second round by sending Beiwen Zhang from the United States home.

Meanwhile, the other three tickets were won by the men's doubles pair of Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Mohammad Reza Pahlevi Isfahani and Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and the women's doubles pair of Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Meilysa Trias Puspitasari.

Febriana/Meilysa have been confirmed to directly qualify for the quarterfinals because their opponent, the first seed, Liu Sheng Shu/Tan Ning from China, is confirmed to withdraw from the tournament.
