OpenAI is preparing an AI smart speaker without a screen, Apple accuses of stealing trade secrets
JAKARTA - OpenAI is reportedly preparing its first AI hardware which is projected to be an artificial intelligence-based digital companion. The product is said to be in the form of a portable smart speaker without a screen and will rely on ChatGPT as the main brain.
However, this ambitious project was immediately overshadowed by legal issues. Apple sued OpenAI with the accusation of stealing trade secrets that were allegedly used in the development of the device.
Citing a Bloomberg report, the AI device is designed not just as a smart speaker, but as a digital assistant that is able to interact like a human and understand the user's habits over time.
Not a Regular Smart Speaker
Unlike conventional smart speakers, the OpenAI device is said to have a personality and is able to build a more natural relationship with users.
This device is powered by ChatGPT and GPT-Live technology so it can have real-time conversations.
Its functions include:
controlling smart home devices,
answer various questions,
play music and media,
reply to a message,
provide daily assistance,
and provide recommendations based on user habits.
The longer it is used, the device is claimed to understand the owner's preferences better so that it can provide a more personal and proactive response.
Equipped with a Camera and Can Be Taken Anywhere
The report said OpenAI's AI device has a camera that recognizes the surrounding environment so that AI can understand the context when interacting with users.
The device is also equipped with a rechargeable battery so that it can be carried from one room to another without having to always be connected to the electricity.
Interestingly, this hardware has mechanical components that can move on their own. The goal is to create the impression that the device is alive and able to interact more expressively with humans.
Designed by Sam Altman and Jony Ive
This AI device is the result of a collaboration between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former Apple Design Chief Jony Ive. The two have previously given clues about the project.
They describe the device as a "new type of computer" that was designed from the start specifically for the era of artificial intelligence.
Sam Altman even called the prototype of the device as something that is "very impressive", while Jony Ive described it as a really interesting product and different from the current devices.
Apple Sues OpenAI
In the midst of its development, Apple actually filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. In the lawsuit document, Apple accused OpenAI of gaining access to confidential company information, including exclusive techniques in the finishing process (metal finishing) of materials used in hardware.
Apple assesses that OpenAI's hardware business is built on the use of trade secrets obtained illegally. However, a number of sources familiar with the project said that OpenAI's AI devices do not resemble Apple's current products.
OpenAI itself is rumored not to consider the HomePod and HomePod mini lines as direct competitors because the concept of the devices it develops is very different.
Apple Also Prepares Similar Products
Ironically, Apple is also said to be developing a new generation of smart home devices.
Based on various reports, the device will have a screen measuring around 7 inches, built-in speakers, a camera for video calls and face recognition, and AI-based Siri integration.
Although it has a similar function as a smart home control center, Apple's device concept still relies on a screen, while OpenAI's product is designed without a screen and prioritizes conversation-based interaction.
Launch of Back to 2027
Initially, the OpenAI AI device was expected to launch in 2026. However, the latest report says the schedule has shifted to 2027. However, OpenAI still has the opportunity to introduce the device to the public this year as an introduction stage before the official launch.
The legal process with Apple has the potential to affect the schedule. Apple asked the court to issue a temporary restraining order (injunction). If the request is granted, OpenAI could be banned from launching the hardware until the legal dispute is resolved.
