Komdigi: Implementation of Biometric SIM Registration is 100 Percent Running

JAKARTA - Director General of Digital Ecosystems of the Ministry of Komdigi, Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, stated that the implementation of the registration of biometric SIM cards based on face recognition has been 100% and in accordance with the applicable provisions.

During the two-day inspection in Surabaya, Gresik, Lamongan, and Sidoarjo, Edwin saw that all mobile operators had fully implemented biometric registration, without finding SIM cards that were activated using someone else's identity.

"In the last two days we have not found pre-registered cards or cards that have been activated using data or NIK belonging to others. We also see that the compliance of the three operators has reached 100 percent," said Edwin, quoted Tuesday, July 14.

However, the Ministry of Communication and Information emphasized that supervision would continue to be carried out to ensure that there were no more practices of identity abuse in mobile customer registration.

The government will also not hesitate to take legal action if it is still found that the personal data of others is used to activate SIM cards.

"If there are still practices of misuse of NIK belonging to others that are used for SIM registration, we will take further action. Later we will work together with the police, because it is part of stealing personal data," he said.

According to him, the implementation of biometric registration also did not have a significant impact on the sale of new SIM cards. Based on monitoring, the average daily sales are still in the range of 250 thousand to 260 thousand cards, not much different from before the implementation of biometrics.

Edwin appreciated the support of mobile operators, business actors, and the public who have supported the policy. He also invited the public to continue to maintain the security of personal data by ensuring that each SIM card is only registered using the valid owner's identity.

"We want to ensure that the use of this SIM card is actually used by the right person. So don't use someone else's name, someone else's identity, to carry out activities through mobile operators," he concluded.
