Samsung Prepares to Produce Tesla AI5 Chips at Texas Factory

JAKARTA - Samsung Electronics is preparing to produce Tesla's latest generation AI chip, AI5. The chip will be made with 2 nanometer technology at Samsung's factory in Taylor, Texas, USA.

Yonhap in its report, quoted on Monday, July 13, said the preparations were revealed after a Samsung executive wrote on LinkedIn that AI5 had completed the tape-out process. This stage marks the completion of the final design of the chip before it is handed over to the factory for production.

In the semiconductor industry, tape-out is the final stage of chip design. The design company then hands over the finished design to the chip manufacturing company or foundry.

AI5 was specifically designed by Tesla to support its Full Self-Driving system, its Optimus humanoid robot, and the company's artificial intelligence data center.

According to the post, Samsung will use a 2 nanometer production process to make the chip. The smaller the process size, the closer the transistors that can be implanted in the chip, although the performance ultimately depends on the design and production process.

AI5 is expected to be used in Tesla's next-generation products. This disclosure is the first detailed information on the production schedule of the chip by Samsung.

Samsung's factory in Taylor is expected to start operating on a limited basis by the end of this year. Mass production for major customers, including Tesla, is scheduled to begin in 2027.
