Jannik Sinner Defends Wimbledon Title after Beating Alexander Zverev

JAKARTA - Jannik Sinner has once again proved himself as the ruler of the Wimbledon Grand Slam tennis event. The world number one tennis player successfully defended his title by stopping Alexander Zverev in the 2026 edition.

Sinner, who is from Italy, stopped his German opponent in a four-set match with a final score of 6-7 (7), 7-6 (2), 6-3, and 6-4 in the 2026 Wimbledon final which took place in London, England, Sunday, July 12, 2026, WIB night.

"I'm grateful to the whole team and all the support I've received. This final is amazing and it always takes two players to produce a game like this," Sinner said after the match, quoted from the ATP website.

The victory, which was achieved in three hours and 46 minutes, became Sinner's fifth Grand Slam title throughout his career as well as his first major trophy this season. The result also confirmed the dominance of the 24-year-old on the world tennis stage.

Sinner came to London with a burden after being knocked out in the second round of the 2026 Roland Garros in France. The defeat was successfully used by Zverev to win his first Grand Slam title in Paris.

A different story then presented at Wimbledon. Sinner appeared much more mature and confident. After destroying Novak Djokovic in three straight sets in the semifinals for the second year in a row, he again showed his best game in the final despite having to face strong winds on Centre Court.

"We both started the match very well. My team and I have prepared as well as possible. I am very happy with this victory and the level of play we showed," said Sinner after receiving the trophy.

The 2026 Wimbledon title is Sinner's sixth trophy this season after previously completing the Career Golden Masters - winning all nine ATP Masters 1000 series tournaments - through victory at home in Rome.

In addition, this result makes him extend his dominance over Zverev by recording his 10th consecutive victory in their meeting record. Overall, Sinner now has a 11-4 win-loss record and won 17 of the last 18 sets against the 29-year-old.

The success also made Sinner more solid at the top of the world rankings with a lead of almost 5,000 points over Zverev who will rise to second place in the world. In addition to the trophy, he took home a champion's prize of 3.6 million pounds or around Rp87.2 billion.

Sinner now has 17 titles in the big trophy category, namely a combination of Grand Slam titles, ATP Finals, ATP Masters 1000, and Olympic gold medals. That number is superior to Carlos Alcaraz who has 15 big trophies, but still leads in the Grand Slam title collection with seven trophies.
