India Offers Incentives of up to 1,000 US Dollars to Promote Electric Vehicles and Reduce Pollution
JAKARTA - The government of the national capital of India has approved the "New Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2026," which offers incentives of up to 1,000 US dollars to reduce vehicle pollution and accelerate the transition to clean transportation.
The Delhi Chief Minister's Office announced the policy on social media X, describing it as an initiative to "reduce vehicle pollution and accelerate the transition to clean and sustainable mobility in the national capital."
This policy will take effect on July 1, as quoted from Anadolu (10/7).
Under the new policy, electric cars priced up to 3.5 million Indian rupees ($37,000) will get a 100 percent exemption on road tax and registration fees.
Authorities also announced incentives for scrapping old polluting vehicles ranging from 5,000 Indian rupees ($53) to 100,000 rupees ($1,050).
This policy also includes the development of more than 30,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points throughout the capital.
This reflects "the government's commitment to cleaner air, greener mobility, and a future-ready Delhi, making sustainable transport more accessible to every citizen," the statement added.
Air pollution has become a persistent problem in New Delhi, which gets worse during the winter months when farmers in the surrounding area burn crop residue, adding to emissions from coal-fired power plants and industrial units around the city.
