PHE OSES Starts the First Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (CEOR) Offshore in Indonesia

JAKARTA - PT Pertamina Hulu Energi OSES (PHE OSES) officially started the implementation of Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (CEOR) at the Rama Offshore Field, Southeast Sumatra Working Area (WK SES).

President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Simon Aloysius Mantiri, said that before entering the implementation phase, this project had undergone a series of comprehensive studies and evaluations, including subsurface studies, laboratory analysis, offshore engineering and operational design, as well as economic studies and risk management. "This polymer-based EOR has also gone through an assessment and review process involving EOR experts in the SKK Migas and Pertamina environments, to ensure readiness for implementation from technical, operational, and safety aspects," he said, quoted Saturday, July 11.

He added that the CEOR at the Rama Field is not only an innovation that is oriented towards increasing production, but also a means to obtain operational data, technical learning, and validation of the performance of technology as a foundation for the development of the implementation of CEOR in full field in the future.

In its implementation, polymer flooding technology is applied by injecting a polymer solution into the reservoir to increase the sweep efficiency, so that oil that was previously difficult to produce can be pushed towards the production well more optimally. This method is one of the EOR technologies to increase the advanced stage recovery factor in oil fields that have entered the mature phase.

"Mature fields are not finished assets, but require innovation and new approaches," explained Simon.

Simon said, the polymer injection at the Rama Field is a symbol of a change in thinking. National energy resilience is not only built by finding new reserves, but by maximizing every asset, through the application of innovation and technology.

"In the end, technology is not the goal. Technology is a way for us to keep the nation's trust. The trust to ensure that energy remains available. The trust to strengthen national energy resilience. The trust to ensure Pertamina continues to play its role as the Energy Guru of Indonesia," continued Simon.

Meanwhile, Head of SKK Migas Djoko Siswanto said that the first polymer injection carried out by PHE OSES at the Rama Field is the first CEOR offshore innovation in Indonesia.

"We hope that CEOR will be able to provide good recovery factors, and have an impact on increasing national oil lifting," said Djoko.

PHE OSES targets that the full benefits of this project can be realized by 2030. The success of the implementation of this CEOR is expected to be an important reference for the development of EOR technology and open up opportunities for the application of chemical EOR technology in other offshore fields in Indonesia, thus supporting the increase in national oil and gas production while strengthening national energy resilience.
