UN Says Iran-US Must Be Constructive to Find Comprehensive Peaceful Resolution

JAKARTA - The United Nations on Friday urged Iran, the United States and other parties to engage constructively and in "good faith" to reach a permanent resolution on the Iranian nuclear issue, saying continued negotiations remained essential for regional and international security.

In her speech at the UN Security Council, the Deputy Secretary-General for Political and Peace Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, delivered a message from Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, stressing that diplomacy remains the only viable path forward despite persistent differences over Tehran's nuclear program.

"The Secretary-General calls on all parties to engage constructively and in good faith to reach a peaceful, comprehensive and durable resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue, in accordance with the objectives of Resolution 2231 and the broader goal of strengthening international peace and security," DiCarlo said, launching Anadolu (10/7).

He added, "the framework for further negotiations remains an important step towards a peaceful resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue."

Despite still having significant differences regarding the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which supports the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, all parties have reaffirmed the importance of pursuing a diplomatic solution and expressed willingness to continue engagement, DiCarlo said.

He pointed to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding of June 17 between the US and Iran as evidence of ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The memorandum of understanding includes an agreement to complete the disposal of Iran's enriched nuclear material stockpiles, reprocessing enriched material at a site under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and continue discussions on uranium enrichment and other issues related to Iran's civilian nuclear needs.
