Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono will attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting in Bangkok this weekend

JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono is scheduled to attend an ASEAN foreign ministers meeting in Bangkok, Thailand this weekend, to discuss developments in the situation in Myanmar.

The Philippine Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday announced plans for ASEAN foreign ministers to meet with their counterparts from Myanmar on Sunday (12/7).

The Philippines, as the current chair of the 11-nation bloc, described the meeting as an "informal" meeting and said the meeting would be hosted by Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow in Bangkok.

The ASEAN foreign ministers "will listen to a briefing from U Tin Maung Swe on developments in Myanmar," the Philippine Foreign Ministry said in a statement, launching Anadolu (10/7).

"They are expected to exchange views on ASEAN's engagement with Myanmar, as well as on possible concrete steps that Myanmar can take to address concerns related to the cessation of violence, constructive dialogue among relevant parties, and humanitarian assistance in Myanmar, as set out in the Five Point Consensus (5PC)," he added.

Meanwhile, Spokesperson I of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yvonne Mewengkang, confirmed that the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, would attend the meeting.

"The Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs will participate in the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' information meeting in Bangkok, regarding the Myanmar issue," he explained in a press statement in Jakarta, Thursday (9/7).

He added that the meeting will be a follow-up to the results of the ASEAN Leaders' meeting at the 48th Summit in Cebu in May, to carry out measurable interactions with Myanmar to encourage the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC).

This will mark the first time since the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021 that ASEAN will hold a face-to-face meeting at the foreign minister level with the country.

The 5PC ASEAN called on all parties in Myanmar to stop the violence and "show full restraint."

Under the 5PC, ASEAN also provided humanitarian assistance to Myanmar through the Humanitarian Assistance Coordination Center for Disaster Management, while envoys were specifically tasked to visit Myanmar to "meet with all relevant parties."
