Muchova Passes the Needle's Eye to Reach the 2026 Wimbledon Final

JAKARTA - Czech Republic's Karolina Muchova has managed to escape the needle's eye by saving a match point to stop Coco Gauff and advance to the 2026 Wimbledon final.

Muchova secured her place in the grass-court Grand Slam's final round with a victory in a three-set match that ended 6-2, 1-6, and 7-6 (10-8) on Thursday, July 9, 2026, WIB night.

"This is a very special moment. Wimbledon is one of the biggest tournaments with an amazing history. Just playing on Centre Court is very special, especially now that I have the opportunity to appear again in the final," said Muchova, quoted by the WTA website.

The 29-year-old was on the verge of defeat when he was 8-9 in the tiebreak. However, he was finally able to save one match point before turning the tide and ending Gauff's fight.

This is Muchova's second victory over the American this season after losing their first six meetings.

"I keep telling myself that if I have to lose, then I want to lose with my own game, which is to stay aggressive and keep moving forward," said Muchova.

The semifinal match was up and down. Muchova was dominant in the first set, but Gauff retaliated heavily in the second set so that the match had to be decided through the third set which was very tight.

Both players defended their serves throughout the decisive set. Gauff managed to thwart two break points while trailing 1-2, while Muchova managed to get out of the pressure when facing a score of 15-40 at 4-4.

The drama reached its peak in the tiebreak. Muchova was ahead 6-3 thanks to his aggressive play in front of the net. However, Gauff bounced back by grabbing three consecutive points and tying the score, then turned ahead 9-8 and got a match point.

Unfortunately, Gauff failed to finish the match. He failed to execute a forehand drop shot while serving for the win. The mistake was taken advantage of by Muchova who then grabbed the next two points to secure a ticket to the final match.

This success ended Muchova's wait to return to winning a match after saving a match point, something he last did in the 2023 Roland Garros semi-final against Aryna Sabalenka.

"That's tennis. I just panicked a little because the ball bounce was quite difficult. Moments like this are a lesson for me to have a clearer plan in the next opportunity," said Gauff.

Muchova will face ninth seed Linda Noskova, also from the Czech Republic, in the final. It's the first time in almost a decade that a top-four match has pitted two players from the same country since Serena Williams and Venus Williams in 2017.

Previously, Muchova had defeated Noskova in their only meeting in the third round of last season's US Open.
