After 10 Days, the Jatiwaringin Tangerang Landfill Fire Finally Extinguished
JAKARTA - After lasting for 10 days, the fire at the Jatiwaringin Landfill (TPA), Mauk District, Tangerang Regency, Banten, was finally completely extinguished. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) confirmed that the main area of the TPA, which was previously engulfed in flames, had entered the intensive cooling phase.
Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, said the success in extinguishing the fire was the result of the hard work of the joint team, which from the beginning carried out emergency operations in a coordinated manner through land and air routes since the fire was first reported on June 30, 2026.
"The main land of the Jatiwaringin landfill, which is approximately 15 hectares in size and has been affected by the fire, has been reported to have been successfully extinguished by 100 percent and is currently in an intensive cooling phase," Abdul said in his statement, Friday, July 10.
Although the main area of the fire has been successfully extinguished, the joint team is still on standby to ensure that there is no follow-up fire. Monitoring continues to be carried out at a number of points that are still emitting thin smoke due to the heat remaining under the waste pile.
"The joint team is still anticipating hot spots and thin smoke clouds detected in the waste disposal area outside the landfill near the lake or lake," he said.
During the handling process, BNPB together with the regional government, TNI, Polri, ministries and related institutions deployed various resources to accelerate the fire. The air operation was strengthened with four water bombing helicopters that sprayed hundreds of thousands of liters of water to fire points that were difficult to reach from land.
Three Mi-8AMT, Sikorsky UH60A, and Sikorsky UH60L helicopters operate in turn in the extinguishing process, while one Mi-8 MSBT helicopter is temporarily not operated due to undergoing technical repairs.
On the land route, BNPB also provided various logistical support, ranging from 500 liters of Enviro Class A Foam extinguishing fluid, mini pumps, extinguishing hoses, to handy talkie communication devices to strengthen coordination of officers in the field.
In addition to supporting the firefighting operation, BNPB also provided humanitarian assistance in the form of 100 food packages for affected residents and 150 pairs of boots to support the safety of personnel on duty during the operation.
Abdul added that the acceleration of fire handling was supported through the establishment of the Emergency Disaster Response Status by the Tangerang Regency Government based on the Tangerang Regent's Decree Number 609 of 2026 and the establishment of the Emergency Handling Task Force through Decree Number 613 of 2026.
As the fire was successfully extinguished, the condition of the community around the Jatiwaringin landfill had also returned to normal. BNPB ensured that no more residents were displaced because all affected communities had been facilitated back to their respective homes.
"The emergency handling of the Jatiwaringin landfill fire reached 100 percent and the social conditions of the surrounding community were reported to be conducive with the current number of refugees being zero, because all residents have been facilitated to return to their respective homes," said Abdul.
