Prabowo Receives Thaksin with his Daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra at Kertanegara

JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto received the Prime Minister of Thailand for the period 2001-2006, Thaksin Shinawatra, and his family, including his daughter, the Prime Minister of Thailand for the period 2024-2025, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, at his private residence, Jalan Kertanegara, Jakarta.

A number of photos of the meeting were shared by the Cabinet Secretariat (Setkab), along with a description of the meeting which was called "warm and full of familiarity".

"The meeting, which was warm and full of familiarity, became a momentum to strengthen the long-standing friendship. In a relaxed atmosphere, the President and Thaksin also exchanged views on various global strategic developments and regional dynamics," said Cabinet Secretary (Seskab) Teddy Indra Wijaya as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, July 8.

In Indonesia, Thaksin is not a stranger. Thaksin is currently contributing to the governance of the Danantara Investment Management Agency (BPI) as a member of the advisory board.

"Through meetings like this, the Indonesian government continues to strengthen the network of friendship and communication with world leaders and figures as part of efforts to expand cooperation and strengthen Indonesia's position in the midst of global dynamics," said Teddy.

The last meeting between President Prabowo and Thaksin's daughter, who today also attended the Kertanegara, took place in 2025, namely during President Prabowo's state visit to Bangkok, Thailand, on May 19, 2025. During the official visit to Bangkok at that time, Paetongtarn was still serving as the prime minister of Thailand.

However, Paetongtarn was removed from her post as prime minister by the Thai Constitutional Court on August 29, 2025 after her phone conversation scandal with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen leaked to the public. The two were then discussing border disputes.

After that, Paetongtarn also resigned from her position as the head of the Pheu Thai Party.

The incident was then followed by the general election in Thailand in September 2025. The election was won by Anutin Charnvirakul from the conservative Bhumjaithai Party, and was the opposition to the Pheu Thai Party.

Meanwhile, Thaksin earlier last month was fully free from his sentence after receiving a pardon from the King of Thailand. Based on the contents of the decree, Thaksin no longer needs to serve a probationary period which ends on September 9, 2026.
