War on Drugs Not Enough Enforcement, Senator Dayat El Minta Digital Literacy Strengthened

JAKARTA - Member of the South Kalimantan Regional Election DPD RI, Muhammad Hidayattollah (Dayat El) conveyed a number of strategic concerns related to efforts to prevent and eradicate drug abuse in the Working Meeting of Committee I of the DPD RI with the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

In the meeting, Dayat El emphasized that the war against drugs is not enough to rely on legal enforcement.

According to him, prevention measures must be strengthened through massive and structured digital literacy from an early age, ranging from elementary school to university.

"Children and young generations must be equipped with the ability to understand the dangers of drugs from an early age, including recognizing the various modes of dissemination that are now developing in the digital space," he said.

As a representative of young people who always speak out at the central parliament level, he also highlighted the increasing misuse of pods or electronic cigarettes (vape) as a media for consumption and distribution of narcotics.

Therefore, he asked the BNN to strengthen preventive measures, especially in South Kalimantan which is his electoral district.

Apart from the prevention aspect, Dayat El assessed that strengthening rehabilitation services must also be a serious concern.

According to him, people who are victims of drug abuse must be given easy, adequate, and stigma-free access to rehabilitation, so that they have the opportunity to recover and be productive in the community.

"Efforts to eradicate must go hand in hand with prevention and rehabilitation. Do not let those who want to recover have difficulty getting decent rehabilitation services," he said.

On the same occasion, Hidayattollah expressed condolences for the death of a police officer in Central Kalimantan while on duty to eradicate the drug trafficking network.

Although the incident occurred outside his electoral district, he emphasized that the sacrifice of the police was a reminder that narcotics crime was a national threat that must be faced together.

"I also mourn the death of police officers in the course of their duties. This sacrifice is proof that the war against drugs requires courage, synergy, and commitment from all parties. This is not a matter of one region, but the responsibility of the entire nation," he concluded.
