Mount Anak Krakatau is still on alert status, prohibited from approaching the crater radius of 3 km
JAKARTA - The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has asked the public to remain vigilant as the volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait on the border between South Lampung, Lampung and Banten is now at Level III or Alert.
The post officer of the Anak Krakatau Mountain Observation Post of the PVMBG Geological Agency, Deny Mardiono, said that visual and seismic activity at the active volcano was still being recorded.
Based on the results of the observation period today, Wednesday (8/7) from 12.00 to 18.00 WIB, the smoke plume from the active crater was observed to rise to a height of tens of meters.
"Visually, the volcano is clearly visible until it is covered by fog. The weakly pressurized crater smoke is observed to be white with medium to thick intensity and 10 to 100 meters above the crater peak," he said.
He added, from the aspect of earthquakes, the volcanic monitoring authority detected continuous tremor activity or microtremoryang indicates the movement of magma or fluid in the mountain body.
"The seismogram device recording at the observation post, he said, his party found that the tremor earthquake activity was recorded with a pattern of vibration amplitude in the range of 1 to 15 millimeters, with a dominant amplitude of 5 millimeters," he said.
Meanwhile, the meteorological conditions around the area of Mount Anak Krakatau, which is 157 meters above sea level (msl), were reported to be sunny and cloudy.
The air temperature in the area ranges from 27.1 to 31.9 degrees Celsius with air humidity of 55 to 65 percent, and a weak wind blowing towards the north and northwest.
He emphasized that although the seismic activity and visual smoke plumes continued to occur above the crater peak, the surface conditions or sea waves in the surrounding waters were observed to be calm.
In order to anticipate the potential danger of an eruption, the Geological Agency issued a recommendation that the public, visitors, tourists, and climbers should not approach the mountain or carry out activities within a three-kilometer radius of the active crater.
"The recommendation for the public, visitors, tourists or climbers is not to approach Mount Anak Krakatau or to carry out activities within a radius of 3 km from the active crater," he said.
