Former Police Officer of a Lecturer Murder in Muara Bungo Sentenced to Life in Prison

Muara Bungo District Court, Jambi, sentenced former police officer Waldi Adiyat to life imprisonment for being proven guilty of premeditated murder of lecturer at the Institute of Administration and Health Setih Setio (IAK SS), EY.

"Yes, it is true, a life sentence," said Muara Bungo District Court Public Relations Officer Monalisa, as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, July 7.

The verdict was read in an open hearing for the public on Tuesday by a panel of judges headed by Justiar Ronal with members Dyah Devina Maya Ganindra and Muhammad Faisal Abdi.

Based on the ruling published on the website of the Directorate General of the General Court of the Supreme Court, the panel of judges stated that the defendant was proven to have violated Article 459 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code.

In its consideration, the panel of judges said the murder began when the defendant and the victim got into an argument at the victim's house. When emotions peaked, the defendant strangled the victim's neck with both hands.

The defendant then took a stainless steel broom handle, suffocated the victim's body, and pressed the victim's neck with the broom handle until the victim died.

The panel of judges also found other forms of violence that the defendant did not admit during the trial.

Based on the visum et repertum, expert testimony, and other evidence, the victim suffered a hard blow to the back of the head, resulting in a lump of about 13 centimeters, blood seepage in the inner chest bone, as well as bruises and abrasions on the neck and waist.

According to the panel of judges, the defendant's series of actions showed violence that was carried out gradually and repeatedly, thus strengthening the proof of the element of premeditated murder.

The victim EY was previously found dead at his house in Sungai Mengkuang Village, Central Rimbo District, Bungo Regency, Jambi, on Saturday (1/11/2025) at around 13.00 WIB.

Less than 24 hours after the discovery of the body, the Bungo Police arrested Waldi Adiyat who fled to Tebo Regency.

After reading the verdict, the panel of judges gave time to the defendant, legal counsel, and public prosecutor to express their attitude, whether to accept the verdict or file a legal action.

Monalisa said that her party had not been able to confirm whether the defendant would appeal because they still had seven days according to the provisions.

"I don't know yet, but there is a seven-day period to file a legal appeal," he said.
