Trump Says There Will Be a Deal with Iran or the U.S. Will Finish the Job
JAKARTA - President Donald Trump said on Monday the United States would either reach an agreement with Iran or "finish the job," renewing his threat of military action as Tehran showed a defiant stance as a series of funerals for late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei began.
The indirect US-Iranian talks ended last week with no public signs of an enduring peace, despite a 60-day ceasefire intended to create space for diplomacy after the US and Israeli attacks that triggered the conflict.
"We're going to make a deal or we're going to get the job done. Okay. And it won't be hard to get the job done. I'd rather make a deal, because I don't want to affect 91 million people," President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, launching Al Arabiya and Reuters (7/7).
"We can destroy their bridges in an hour, we can cut off their energy supply. They have no money now. We haven't given them money," he said.
President Trump spoke after the start of Khamenei's funeral procession last weekend, where, instead of appearing weakened by the war that began with the US and Israeli attacks on February 28, the Iranian regime appeared defiant.
The 60-day ceasefire was intended by Washington to revive diplomacy in an effort to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
