Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono and Chairman of the MPR Muzani Scheduled to Attend the Funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

JAKARTA - Foreign Minister (Menlu) Sugiono together with the Chairman of the MPR RI Ahmad Muzani is planned to attend the funeral ceremony for the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This arrival plan is a form of respect as well as maintaining good relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Sugiono said that until now the government is still waiting for confirmation from Iranian authorities regarding the time and location that can be attended by the Indonesian delegation.

"We are planning to attend. We are still waiting for the time, place, and place where we can attend. As we know, there is also a procession related to the series of events from the funeral," said Sugiono in Jakarta, Monday, July 6.

According to him, communication between the Indonesian government and Iran continues. The great respect of the Iranian people for Ayatollah Khamenei makes the organizers still arrange a location that allows them to receive visits from foreign delegations.

"From the communication we continue to do, because the respect for him is very great, then the mass is also very large there, the Iranian side is still trying to find a point or points to do it," he said.

Sugiono explained that the Indonesian government had previously received an invitation to attend the series of events. In the initial stage, Indonesia conveyed that the RI Ambassador to Iran would represent the government in the procession.

"We received a notification or invitation regarding the event and at that time we also said that the representative of the Indonesian government was the Indonesian Ambassador in Iran," he said.

He said the decision was made by considering a number of technical aspects, including the crowded agenda of state affairs in the country involving a number of key officials.

However, the situation changed after the Indonesian government received a response from Iran that only officials with a level above ambassador were allowed to attend.

"Then we got confirmation that Iran would only give access to officials above the ambassador," said Sugiono.

Due to time constraints and the applicable mechanism, the government does not allow for the sending of a replacement at the agenda. After further coordination, Sugiono said that the Indonesian government plans to send a high-level delegation to the funeral procession scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
