Mandiri Jogja Marathon 2026 to be a driving force for Yogyakarta's economy
JAKARTA - Mandiri Jogja Marathon (MJM) 2026 again shows that a sports event can have an impact that goes beyond the finish line. Carrying the theme "More Than a Race", the implementation of this sports tourism event also encourages an increase in community consumption activities and economic circulation in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) during the implementation week.
Based on the results of the Mandiri Institute's research, the total spending of the people in Yogyakarta during the week of the 2026 MJM (15 - 21 June 2026) increased by 7.4 percent compared to the average period before the event. This growth increased compared to the 2025 MJM which recorded a 4.6 percent increase in spending, reflecting the increasing contribution of the event to regional economic activity.
With this achievement, Yogyakarta became the region with the highest shopping growth compared to a number of major cities on the island of Java during the period of implementation of the 2026 MJM. The increase in community consumption in DIY was recorded at around 1.2 to 4.1 times higher than Bandung, Semarang, Jakarta, and Surabaya, which further strengthens the role of Mandiri Jogja Marathon as one of the drivers of regional economic activity.
Bank Mandiri Corporate Secretary Adhika Vista said that the implementation of the Mandiri Jogja Marathon is part of the company's commitment to bring sustainable added value through the synergy of sports, tourism, and economic empowerment of the community. This commitment is in line with the spirit of Serving with Full Heart which is realized by Bank Mandiri through various initiatives that provide tangible benefits for the community.
"Carrying the spirit of 'More Than a Race', Mandiri Jogja Marathon is not only an international-class sports event, but also a platform that is capable of creating real economic impact. We hope that the presence of this event can strengthen the sport tourism ecosystem while providing wider benefits for the community, business actors, and regions," said Adhika, in a statement, Friday, July 3.
The implementation of MJM 2026 also increases the mobility of the community and tourists, which then encourages economic activity in various sectors, ranging from accommodation, transportation, culinary, trade, to MSMEs who are involved in the series of activities.
This contribution is further visible when compared to the condition of public consumption before the implementation of MJM 2026. In the previous weeks, the average weekly spending growth in Yogyakarta was in the range of 0.5 percent week-on-week (WoW) even though it had entered the school holiday period.
The momentum of the MJM implementation then became a catalyst for accelerating community consumption. During the implementation of the event, shopping growth increased to 7.3 percent WoW, as well as the highest acceleration in the last four years since 2023. This achievement shows that the implementation of sports tourism is able to provide a significant boost to local economic activity in the midst of global dynamics uncertainty.
Furthermore, Adhika said, as part of its commitment to creating shared value, Bank Mandiri will continue to present various initiatives that support the development of national sports tourism as well as strengthening regional economic growth through sustainable collaboration with various stakeholders.
"Through collaboration with various stakeholders, we hope that the Mandiri Jogja Marathon can continue to provide wider benefits, both in supporting the development of sports tourism and encouraging economic activities of the community in the region," concluded Adhika.
