Bali Still Dominates RI Premium Tourism, AJIP Reveals the Emergence of New Challengers

Bali is still the epicenter of Indonesia's premium tourism industry.

The Bali Tourism Journalists Alliance (AJIP Bali) placed six resorts on the island of the Gods in the list of the eight best beach resorts in Indonesia 2026, reflecting Bali's strong competitiveness in the luxury hospitality segment.

Two other destinations that are also included in the list are Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, and Sumba Island.

The entry of these two areas is considered a signal for the development of the premium tourism market outside Bali.

The AJIP Bali recommendation is compiled based on a number of indicators, including service quality, guest experience, location, design, and commitment to sustainable tourism practices.

The eight resorts on the list are The Legian Seminyak, Ta'aktana, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa Labuan Bajo, NIHI Sumba, The Ritz-Carlton Bali, Regent Bali Canggu, Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach, Jumeirah Bali, and Potato Head Village Bali.

AJIP Bali Coordinator, Giostanovlatto Sinantong, said that competition in the premium hospitality industry is no longer only relying on the luxury of facilities, but also the ability to present an authentic experience for tourists.

"The standard for luxury tourism has changed. Tourists now want to go home with stories, not just photos. They are looking for places that have character, respect local culture, provide sincere service, and show concern for the environment. That's what makes a resort have more value in the eyes of international tourists," he said.

According to Giostanovlatto, Bali still has a competitive advantage thanks to a mature tourism ecosystem, supported by infrastructure, quality human resources, and a variety of tourist attractions that support the hospitality industry.

However, the emergence of Labuan Bajo and Sumba as flagship destinations shows that Indonesia's premium tourism market is beginning to diversify.

This condition is considered to open up opportunities for the equalization of investment in the tourism sector as well as strengthening Indonesia's position in the global luxury tourism market.

"The more areas that are able to provide international-class services, the stronger Indonesia's position as a world tourism destination," he said.
