Iran Holds Funeral Prayers for Late Ali Khamenei

JAKARTA - Iran held a mass funeral prayer for the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla Mosque, Tehran, on Sunday.

Khamenei's funeral and that of his family members were attended by hundreds of thousands of mourners. Many of them arrived at the site in the early hours carrying Iranian flags.

The prayers at the main prayer complex were led by senior Shiite cleric, Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, senior military and political officials, and religious figures were among those who attended the ceremony.

Khamenei died in the US-Israeli military aggression against Iran that began on February 28, which triggered retaliation from Tehran.

The funeral ceremony officially began on Friday (3/7), with the leaders of friendly countries and official delegations from all regions and beyond paying tribute to the late supreme leader of Iran.

According to the official schedule, the public farewell ceremony will be followed by a main funeral procession in Tehran on Monday (6/7).

The funeral ceremony will then continue to Qom on July 7.

On July 8, ceremonies are scheduled in Iraq - including in Baghdad, Najaf, and Karbala, where the remains will be received by religious and political figures before being transferred to major Shiite shrines.

The funeral and final burial ceremony is scheduled for July 9 at the Imam Ali Reza Mausoleum in the city of Mashhad in the northeast, one of the holiest places for Shiite Islam.
