The accused of the murder of a family in Indramayu was sentenced to life imprisonment.
JAKARTA - The Indramayu District Court sentenced Priyo Bagus Setiawan to life imprisonment for being found guilty of premeditated murder of five members of one family in Indramayu Regency.
The Chairman of the Panel of Judges, Wimmy D. Simarmata, stated that Priyo was proven to have legally and convincingly committed premeditated murder and violence against children that resulted in death.
"Therefore, we sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment," said Wimmy as reported by ANTARA, Friday, July 3.
The panel of judges stated that the defendant was proven to have violated Article 459 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code (KUHP) in conjunction with Article 20 letter c of the Criminal Code as well as Article 80 paragraph (3) of Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning Child Protection in conjunction with Law Number 1 of 2026 concerning Criminal Adjustment.
The judge explained that the element of premeditated murder was met because since August 24, 2025, the defendant together with Ririn Rifanto had agreed to murder to control the victims' property.
According to the panel of judges, the five-day period before the execution was used by the defendant to modify the hammer, devise a way to approach the victim, determine the time of execution, and prepare a series of crimes.
The panel of judges also assessed that there was close cooperation between Priyo and Ririn since the planning stage, the execution of the murder, the possession of the victim's property, the burial of the body in one grave, to the attempt to eliminate evidence.
In his consideration, the judge said Priyo handed the hammer to Ririn to attack the victim Budi Awaludin (45). The defendant also took the victim's baby to the bathroom and drowned him in a tub filled with water as part of the execution of the murder.
"The contribution of the defendant has a very decisive meaning in the realization of all events," said Wimmy.
The panel of judges considered that the defendant's actions had psychological effects on the community, leaving deep grief for the victim's family, and injuring human values because they took the lives of one family, including children.
"The defendant's actions fall under the category of extraordinary crimes, the most serious crimes, and are highly reprehensible in the context of premeditated murder," he said.
Previously, the Public Prosecutor of the Indramayu District Attorney's Office charged Priyo Bagus Setiawan with a prison sentence of 20 years. However, the panel of judges decided to impose a life sentence.
Meanwhile, the trial to read the verdict against the defendant Ririn Rifanto was postponed until Wednesday (8/7) because the panel of judges was still completing the deliberation before passing the verdict.
The case occurred at the end of August 2025 in Paoman Village, Indramayu Regency. Five victims died, namely Sahroni, Budi Awaludin, Euis Dwitasari, a child with the initials RK (7), and an eight-month-old baby.
